The History of Aktion Club

George D. “Jake” Swartout, 1988-1989 Governor of Kiwanis International’s Florida District, organized the first Aktion Club for adults who live with a disability in Putnam County, Florida, in 1987. With the assistance of fellow Kiwanians Ed Brooks and Dick Wittner, the Aktion Club concept spread throughout the Florida District and, by world-of-mouth, throughout the Kiwanis world. Aktion Club became an official Service Leadership Program of Kiwanis International on October 1, 2000.

Today, there are clubs in Canada, Barbados, Malaysia, Jamaica, Bahamas, Philippines, Australia and the United States.

  1. Who sponsors an Aktion Club?

Aktion Club of Santa Fe Place is a Service Leadership Program of South OKC  and Moore Kiwanis, a organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis clubs sponsor Aktion Clubs. Kiwanis members recognize that individuals with disabilities want to take an active role in solving problems and meeting needs of the world around them. One important way Kiwanis clubs serve their local communities is by sponsoring and supporting service organizations for young people. These programs include K-Kids clubs in elementary schools, Builders Clubs in middle schools, Key Clubs in high schools, and Circle K International in colleges and universities.

The Kiwanis club forms the Aktion Club by enlisting interest from a supporting organization, and then provides guidance in concert with organization’s personnel. Key Clubs and CKI clubs often get involved with the Aktion Club, providing excellent role models. Sponsorship by Kiwanis, Key Club and CKI is a winning combination because the ideals of voluntary service are shown by example.
